The Backstory
After having developed something akin to video games solely for myself for many years, I stumbled upon the YouTube channel of Tom aka Let's GameDev in 2017. He motivated me to 'step out' โ and so I participated in his GameJam Game++ Community Challenge 11 with the game "10 Things". However, I completely overextended myself โ hand-drawn scanned assets, far too many ideas without a clear concept, and on top of that, I wanted to use it as an opportunity to delve deeper into Qt, which until then I had primarily used for applications based on Qt Widgets.
Of course, that went wrong โ and even the rescue attempt in "pure" C++ with SDL was mediocre (but at least playable).
Nevertheless, I remained motivated, and so the GPPCC 16 with the theme "In Your Face" and the rule "Only 2 Colours" led me to use my freshly acquired knowledge of the Godot engine to build and release a small game within a week.
It is a role-playing game about a boy who is so engrossed in his fameboy gaming that he fails to notice what is happening around him as he walks through the city - and as a result, he falls into an open manhole. However, instead of waking up with a headache somewhere in the sewer, he finds himself with wondrous abilities in a fantasy world and must somehow carve his way back home, in the best Final Fantasy manner.
The game can be downloaded for free from the Itch.io page.
The game was created using Godot 3.3. It is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.
Graphics were created with GIMP and Aseprite, and the soundtrack was produced using LMMS, which can also be listened to and downloaded via SoundCloud.
For those who prefer not to play themselves, you can alternatively watch the presentation trailer or a complete walkthrough on YouTube.
